The unusual ZIP complex, so called because the façade with its protruding volumes is reminiscent of the typical zip fastener, has been created in the Brigittenau district of Vienna, and is characterized by a wealth of different functions. It houses a social centre, various types of apartments, a recreation area and a green oasis on the roof.
Its shape (a long rectangle) gives rise to a linear structure that stands out among the neighboring buildings. The structural interweaving of the different functional areas and of the materials used, combined with an innovative use of volumes, has nevertheless produced an extremely people-friendly building.
Just as if it were a bridge spanning the comings and goings of the townsfolk, the transparent floor on the ground floor (with its large entrance areas) revitalizes the image of this area of the city, creating an elegant dialogue between indoors and outdoors.
